Okay. I’m sorry. I heard about this movie being made and while I don’t understand why having an all-black cast somehow equalizes the all-white cast of the original movie but damn, it’s going to suck.
I am all for the breaking down of walls and blah blah blah feminist i’m-not-a-racist blah blah but when a perfectly good script, play, movie, actors, and actresses are re-made WITH THE SAME DIALOGUE AND PLOT as the original only with BLACK people I have to wonder why the hell money would be wasted on it. There’s nothing involving race in Steel Magnolias. It’s about a group of friends, mothers, and their children, the circle of life and whatever, whatever…and if a black mother can’t relate to Sally Field’s White Mama M’Lynn’s funeral speech then she has a lot of work to do on herself for being so racist.
I am not being racist by saying that the trailer looks like another Tyler Perry movie. I’m not racist by saying that Queen Latifah is the LAST actress in the WORLD who should be playing M’Lynn but there she is.
Basically by saying that Steel Magnolias could be more relevant and inclusive by giving it an all-black cast is saying that black people can’t relate to white people and vice versa…so who’s racist now, Black People? Who’s racist now?
Black people can relate to white people. People of color can relate to white people. We are bombarded with multi-dimensional, dynamic, white characters everyday, while barely seeing any character of color who don’t fit the stereotype.
