Because it’s not like Native Americans who are wary/offended exist right. They’re all happy at this possible continuation of a stereotype and otherwise whitewashing of a character justified because the actor might be, but never confirmed, Native American.

And even better that he was adopted into a tribe even though he will never have to bear the burden of those stereotypes or suffer from the same injustices as others.

What it ACTUALLY is/does:

EXACT SAME as racism just towards the majority (non-minority) in a society

Makes racism toward certain races “okay”

Opresses the majority

Inverses race dominance while NOT fixing the issue of TRUE EQUALITY

I think a lot of people (esp on here) interpret it differently, like most metaphors and analogies. I can totally see how one would see it as a dismissal if you look at it right (or wrong) but how a lot of people us it is “we’re all the same inside, we should treat each other that way”

They are (and i am) very aware that people dont treat each other that way, but they wish that people would so they use that. And even though i stand by that phrase to an extent, i know how far fetched it is to believe just saying that will magically *fix* everything. if anything i use it to remind myself in certain situations, “hey, that person’s a human too, just like me, i should treat them fairly, despite their physical features or things they may have done wrong”

I believe that it’s a nice thing to go by, but doesnt automatically fix everything all the time. Being a metaphor it probably wouldnt work i guess to quite a few… now that i think about it lol.(might work for kids to an extent or something) So like, there are two sides to the coin! It’s not negative, or at least, doesnt have to be! :D

The phrases can be used as just a statement on it’s own, but when it’s used as an end all be all argument when people are discussing an issue that pertains to inequality then yeah I see it as a dismissal.

Respect to the San Antonio Spurs for facing the racist attacks and having Sebastien de la Cruz back to sing the US national anthem before tonight’s game 4 of the NBA finals. Credit to Mayor Julián Castro and his wife, Erica, for showing their support by being there to introduce him.

Let us all take this as a lesson: Confront the negativity. Bullies don’t pick on the those who stand up for themselves.

For years, we’ve allowed racist think tanks, politicians, and the mainstream media to use Mexicans as a scapegoat. This is why so many felt comfortable attacking little Sebastien for representing his heritage on Tuesday. Such hatred had become normalized.

There were some who felt Sebastien shouldn’t have worn his traje de charro. He provoked the racist attacks, they said. That’s absurd.

In the words of Gloria Anzaldúa: “This land was Mexican once, was Indian always and is. And will be again.” Mexicans cannot be considered foreigners on the land that was once ours, and certainly not “illegal,” as some have suggested.

Never let the hatred and ignorance of others define you. Do as little Sebastien has done and allow the beauty of our culture to speak for itself.

And speaking of beauty, as we’ve said before, Mexican is a beautiful word, use it! Let’s stop calling things that are uniquely Mexican Hispanic or Latino. Like mariachi, for instance. This is how Mexican gets turned into a dirty word, which if you noticed, is how many were using it on Tuesday.

The Spurs, Julián Castro and little Sebastien may’ve just done more for Mexicans in the US than anything or anyone else has in recent memory. And they did so by simply being themselves: Mexican. ¡Eso es todo!

Paula reminds me of my uncle. I was in middle school when I first heard him say racism doesn’t exist blah blah blah were all equal, while debating that point with my mom when she warned him to be careful. See he’s almost always in majority White settings and damn near all his friends/gfs are white. Anyways one day at his job a bar and grill joint. Some drunk white woman told that half breed nigger to bring her more porkchops and liquor. He’s not biRacial just light skinned. Needless to say he came home about to cry with his feelings hurt. Many people need a kick in the ass to get the point. Others need a complete ass whooping. Some just never get it…
